How do I winterize my marine engine in the boat: Tips and guidelines
Share
How do I prepare my marine engine for winter? In this blog I will take you through the process of preparing a ship engine for winter. It is very simple (Yes, really!), but it is important that you know what you are doing before you start. Let's start with the question: What do I need to winterize my marine engine?
- Antifreeze ( Concentrate or mixed ) Make sure you look carefully at the freezing point of the Antifreeze, in the Netherlands -26 is generally more than sufficient.
- A large funnel
- A full starter battery ( Also good to keep the batteries warm and dry in winter store )
- A 2nd person to help youthis will make the process a lot easier
If you have all the above products together we can start winterizing the engine.
Step 1: Close the raw water tap of the engine cooling
Step 2: Open the throwing pot
Step 3: Now fill the throwing pot to the brim with antifreeze
Step 4 : Turn on the outside water tap and wait until the antifreeze has subsided. Step 4: Close the outside water tap again and check whether you can visibly see the antifreeze up to the tap. If not, repeat steps 3 and 4.
Step 5: Fill the throwing pot with antifreeze again and have person 2 start the engine
Step 6: Pour antifreeze into the throwing pot until you see visible antifreeze coming out of the exhaust the required amount of antifreeze depends on the size of the cooling system.
Step 7: Fill the jar to the brim with antifreeze
Step 8: Close the jar again
Step 9: Congratulations! You have now prepared your ship's engine for winter independently! Read below how to make your motorcycle ready for summer again!
Additional tips:
Tip 1: For engines with intercooler (Heat exchanger), always check the freezing point of the coolant and replace if necessary.
Tip 2: Only replace the impeller after the winter , some antifreeze types are harmful to the Nytril rubber of the impeller.
This is how you prepare the engine for summer!
Step 1: Replace the impeller
Step 2: Turn the seaweed filter open and fill it with water (If possible)
Step 3: Close the seaweed filter again
Step 4: Open the sea water tap and start the engine. Always check whether cooling water comes out of the exhaust!
